Services for Young People You Didn't Know Existed- Whitehaven Theatre Group

After the results came in for Cumbria County Council's Youth Consultation, the team at the council found that a lot of young people were asking for local services that already existed in the area.

So, we've set out to document these local places and help you find them much more easily.

In Cumbria there are loads of services for young people, from football to theatre groups and even the good old youth clubs – there is something for everyone, but you might not know they exist, so we’re here to help!

Over the next few months, we’ll be visiting different youth services around the county to find out everything you need to know, including times, days, places, and not forgetting what they get up to!

If you’ve got a love for performing, then this week’s feature could be right up your street!

Whitehaven Theatre Group gives everyone and anyone the chance to get involved, whether you love being on the stage and performing, or you want to get involved behind the scenes in areas like sound, lighting, hair & makeup, or front of house – everyone is always welcome!

The group puts on three shows a year; a springtime musical, a September play, and a December panto.

Scarlett has been a member of the group for the last 15 years, joining when she was just seven years old, she said: “I’ve loved every minute of the last 15 years.

“There’s something for everyone to get involved in and there is always something going on, and it’s always a laugh.

“Everyone in the group is so friendly and I’ve made some of my best friends there, rehearsal nights are my favourite nights of the week!”

Over her time in the group, Scarlett has been in a number of performances, most recently being Kinky Boots, as well as being lucky enough to play Rapunzel in Tangled.

Scarlett has also been a part of; Oliver Twist, Grease, Aladdin, Frozen, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, and many more!

Rehearsals, which will start up again in September, usually take place on a Monday and Wednesday evening from 7pm – 9pm.

Scarlett says: “It can be really tiring but it’s so fun and so worth it!

“My one piece of advice to anyone who might be interested but feels a bit nervous would be just to come down, push yourself out of your comfort zone and try something new.

“Everyone is really friendly and there is no judgement whatsoever – we’ll all be there to greet you with open arms and friendly faces!”

This year’s panto is an absolute classic; The Wizard of Oz, and auditions are being held on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd June at 7pm in the groups rehearsal rooms on Esk Avenue in Whitehaven, more information can be found on the Whitehaven Theatre Group Facebook page.
