Meet the Cumbrian Magician Breaking World Records and Performing for the Stars

Updated: Sep 13, 2021

This week, we caught up with 23-year-old Lord Taran Harvey-Chadwick, a magician, and performer, originally from Seascale, Cumbria.

Taran attended West Lakes Academy and has now graduated from Goldsmiths University in London.

So far, Taran has performed for infamous singers, David Walliams, broken a world record, and met with the CEO of Rubix. He's also rubbed shoulders with Dynamo and continues to jump from strength to strength in his career.

Taran’s love for magic started at a young age and it stayed with him as he grew up throughout school and into his years spent at university.

‘I’ve been told I started when I was about 4. I got given a magic set for Christmas, learnt it all and then just sort of went from there. I did bits and bobs throughout school, and then I did my first proper gig when I was 12 and I got paid 20 pounds for and it was, oh, it was amazing!’

Moving to London to study for his Degree in Management and Marketing at Goldsmiths University gave Taran’s career a huge boost.

‘When I got to London, I just got job offer, residency, gig, literally everything just chucked at me. I’d just finished my degree in management and marketing at Goldsmiths in London.’

Taran also noted that there are multiple disciplines in magic, and that he personally prefers to perform organic magic.

‘My ‘favourite’ is organic magic, I guess, where it is just everyday objects that you learn to do stuff with as opposed to something that does it for you.’

When asked what advice he would give to young people interested in getting into magic, he urged young people to avoid spending lots of money and put passion first.

‘Do not buy anything! Everyone always says that magic is the most expensive hobby that you can possibly have but I have not bought anything for years, and everyone is always like how have you not bought the latest release of this and that? But I have the mentality now of why should I buy something if I don’t absolutely need it?’

‘YouTube, that’s where I started learning too, I’m a YouTube magician and I’m proud to say it. If you’re passionate enough about it, you’ll get there.'
