1. The Witcher (15)


Adapted from the award-winning video game series, The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) as he battles demons and monsters throughout the fantasy world it is set in.


So, where else would be the perfect backdrop for a world of medieval magic other than The Lakes? It's a perfect match. Season 2 of The Witcher had scenes shot at Hodge Close Quarry in Coniston, the Rydal Caves in Ambleside, and the Lake of Blea Tarn.


The Witcher has been heralded as one of the best video game-to-TV series adaptations and you can catch series 1 now on Netflix with season 2 coming December 17th.



2. 28 Days Later (18)


Directed by Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, 28 Days Later is a horror-drama cult classic in which a deadly virus ravages the United Kingdom, leaving a group of survivors to fend for themselves and find security amid the aftermath of death and destruction.


Starring Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris, the ending scenes of the movie are filmed in the countryside of Ennerdale.



3. Without A Clue (1988) (PG)


Jumping into the ‘80s and starring two of Hollywood's most acclaimed actors, Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley, Without A Clue is an alternate history version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes.


Released in 1988, the film follows a drunk Sherlock Holmes and his partner in crime Dr Watson. However, it is Dr Watson who is the genius and Mr Holmes that is a baffling buffoon who follows in Dr Watson’s footsteps.


A clever play on a classic novel, a lot of the movie was filmed in various locations across the lakes including Derwent Water, Haverthwaite, and Windermere.




4. Tommy (1975) (AA)


A slightly wacky film of the 1970s, Tommy is the story of a psychosomatically blind, deaf, and mute boy who becomes a master pinball player and in the process, the figurehead of a cult.


Based on the 1969 rock opera album “Tommy” by The Who, the film features a legendary cast including Jack Nicholson, Elton John, Tina Turner as well as Roger Daltry who plays the main character.


The filming locations include The Lake District National Park and the final view of Tommy can be seen in Borrowdale, Keswick.




5. Devs (12)


Devs is a conspiracy theory sci-fi thriller in which Lily Chan, a computer engineer, suspects her boyfriend's death is not what it seems.


Believing a shady computer firm is involved, she sets out to investigate, track down the CEO and reveal the truth behind his death.


Premiering in March 2020 on Hulu, the series is available to watch now on I-player with scenes filmed at Cathedral Quarry Cave near Ambleside it is a must-watch to see our beloved county on the show!
