5 Activities to Try in Cumbria This Summer

With summer just around the corner, you might be looking for a new sport or activity to try out.

So today, we're taking a look at an eclectic mix of what's on offer for thrill-seekers and gentle activity lovers alike in our wonderful county over the coming months.

We've picked activities that will suit a variety of budgets and days out based on Trip Advisor.

Canoe/Kayaking on Derwent water

Starting off with a more relaxing option, why not use the abundance of Cumbria’s beautiful lakes to your advantage and capture the scenery around you from the comfort of a canoe or kayak?

This is a unique way to see the best of the lakes. You might want to head up a gentle river, paddle past nesting birds, or go and jump off a jetty… the choice is yours!

This would be a great option for a smaller group of friends as you will be able to truly enjoy your surroundings and serenity.

Ghyll Scrambling

You might be wondering, what is ghyll scrambling?

Well, you might recognise this one from an old school residential trip, but if not, ghyll scrambling involves donning a wetsuit, helmet, and other equipment, and climbing, sliding down, and hopping from pool to pool in the Lake District’s ghylls, or mountain streams.

It’s so fun and is a great activity for team bonding also, so it might be a new idea to introduce to your workmates next time they recommend a work night out!

Bitts Park

Bitts Park is well known to most Cumbrians as a hive of activity during the summer months.

Situated only a short walk from Carlisle city centre, the park has an array of activities on offer, such as the grand climbing frames and play areas for the little (or big!) kids.

Alongside this, if you’ve had a long day of shopping, there are seating areas but on a warm day, the grass is just as good to bask in the sunlight, or even have a kick about if you fancy it.

Rowrah Go Karting

Located in the heart of Cumbria, the Lakeland Circuit not only hosts top-quality facilities but is one of the most technical and demanding tracks in the UK.

It’s a track that has hosted national icons such as Lewis Hamilton and anyone can have the chance to rock up and enjoy their fantastic track.

This would be superb for a large party. I think we all can agree that a massive race with all of your mates sounds incredible!

Rydal Caves

These were once a hidden gem of our county, tucked away just on the outskirts of Ambleside, however they have grown in popularity over the past couple of years, and for good reason…

They are stunning! Fantastic photo opportunities and a long walk on a nice day makes for a great day out.

Psst, we're out here fighting for change.
